About the Property

Affordable Housing in Manchester, NH

In 2000, Great Bridge Properties was hired to provide financing and development services to Families in Transition, a non-profit agency that provides housing and services to women and children at risk of becoming homeless in Manchester. Our challenge, using Low Income Housing Tax Credits as the main funding source, was to develop 20 housing units along with 5000 square feet of community and supportive service space on a 13,000 square foot lot in the Historic Millyard Housing District. To add to this challenge, this new structure was to be attached to Families in Transition's Millyard I Apartments, which was located on the adjacent lot. Working closely with the City of Manchester Planning Department and the Heritage Commission, a concerted attempt was made to design a structure that appeared as a background building, utilizing it's exterior brick finish and detailing to blend harmoniously with both old and new buildings within the neighborhood. The result is a new 5-story brick building that now houses 20 women and families as well as the headquarters for Families in Transition.

Since the building's opening in 2002, it has won 3 separate awards, including the prestigious Historic Preservation Award from the Manchester Historic Association.
